Desktop Computer Tips

Tip#1: Better than Bookmarking
added 10/26/2008
Do you have a particular web page that you need to get to often? Don't waste time opening your browser, then hitting "favorites" and then having to sort through all those listings! Here's a better idea!
Once you have the web page open, you should be able to click on the file menu in the upper left corner. Go down to the menu item that says "send". When you click on that it will ask you where to? Click on the next list where it says "shortcut to desktop" and it will automatically create a new icon for that web page on your Windows desktop page. Then all you have to do is click on it to go straight to that web page!

Tip#2: Too many icons on the desktop!
added 10/26/2008
Have you added so many programs and shortcuts to your desktop that you are running out of room? You need to organize them!
First, you can left click on them and drag them to any position on your desktop. Create rows or columns for specifically related items. You can re-align everything by right clicking on a blank area of desktop, and then click on "line up icons".

If you have too many icons showing and are running out of room, then you can easily add folders, and group the icons into the folders to save space. Simply go to a blank area of the page, right click anywhere, and then choose "new" from the menu. When the second menu opens, click on  "folder", and it will add a new folder to your desktop.

Usually you can immediately type in a name for the folder if it is already highlighted. If it isn't, right click on the folder, and then click on "rename". Once the original name is highlighted, you can type in the new name.

Then click on the icons and shortcuts that you want to put into that folder and drag them over the top of it until it is highlighted. Let go of the mouse button and the icon will disappear into the folder.

We get a lot of downloads and information from different marketers, so we have a folder with each marketer's name on it, plus one for Ebay related items. We also have one for games, sweepstakes entries (HGTV has a lot of those), and TV networks. We watch a lot of the shows on our computers (any time we want to) the day after they air on TV. It's almost as good as Tivo.

You can also make folders for things such as drawing programs, office programs, or anything else for which you would have multiple shortcuts on your desktop. Cleaning up all those separate icons will save a lot of space!
